Question
To anyone who doesnt loathe Jason Gideon, and even if you do, to anyone who knows of the character......what do you think he smells like?  I have an idea in my head, but I cant put it into words.  I always imagined Hotch smelling fresh, kinda like a field after a rain, like Armani's Acqua Di Gio, or Lever 2000 Fresh Rain body wash.  But I cant put Jason into words.  I think he smells smoky, but not like cigarette smoky but like the woods, his cabin, fresh air......I have no clue what I'm saying.

Help?  I'm writing a story and any and all input is appreciated.

Interesting. I always associated that scent with the guy who tries to hit on you at the bar but you're the first suggestion so I thank you kindly. When I go out this weekend I am going to get my hands on some and give it a good smell. Even if it smells like just what I want, the name makes me giggle thinking about rejecting old guys who tried to hit on us in college *LOL*

I imagined Hotch as smelling woodsy but fresh. Kind of like when you're in the woods with an oncoming storm.

Gideon? Hmm. I see him smelling a bit musty and a bit smoky. Maybe like an British gentleman's club (with wood panels, and people smoking cigarettes and drinking whiskey, a warm sort of smell). Does that make any sense? I just described a smell visually and trough touch.

It makes a little sense. My Gideon is a scotch drinker and doesnt smoke at all so while I think I know what you mean, I never imagined him smelling that kind of smoky. Woodsy yes but not gentleman's club. Thanks for your input....an interesting take indeed. I love that I've gotten 3 different takes on it.
a_blackpanthera_blackpanther on October 5th, 2009 06:14 pm (UTC)
I don't see him as a smoker. But there's this smokey smell..i can't really describe it. It's not smelling like a smoker. It's this...sort of dusty smell. And by gentleman's club i did not mean strip club.
SSA McGeek: Gideon....the wise onemcgarrygirl78 on October 5th, 2009 06:57 pm (UTC)
I knew you didnt mean strip club. I believed you to mean a gentleman's club where they smoke cigars and talk big talk, surrounded by books and everything in cherry oak. I always thought that's how professors would smell as if they were surrounded by old books all day.

I can definitely see Jason in that environment but not quite smelling that way. Of course I did ask for everyone's opinion so I do appreciate it : )

Phew! I though you might have misunderstood.

I think Jason Gideon has possibly stepped into a strip club once or twice in his life but it was probably for work : )

And he was thoroughly unimpressed. Oh man, those scenes in Somebody's Watching were hilarious.

I havent seen that one in a while, I get tired of Reid. I remember them in the art gallery but nowhere else. I need to rewatch it.

But yes, totally unimpressed : )

I'm thinking something along the lines of a really classic cologne -- like a male version of Chanel No. 5. I'm not quite sure exactly what the equivalent would be, though...maybe Polo Black?
SSA McGeek: Gideon....thought processesmcgarrygirl78 on October 5th, 2009 05:21 pm (UTC)
Yes yes yes!!!! OK, not necessarily that scent, though Ralph Lauren is definitely classic but yes, classic, classic male smell...that's it. I know nothing about men but I like that description of "classic male smell", now I just have to put a scent to that name. I dont even know if he wears cologne, maybe aftershave or body wash. I have a lot of thinking to do : )
Danielletwinsfan33 on October 5th, 2009 06:13 pm (UTC)
I'm thinking aftershave...anyway, I'll be looking forward to the story!

I hope to have it posted soon, I surely dont want the scent of the man holding up the story but its good to have a smell in mind for the future.

Wow.This is really interesting.
My comment won't be helpful but you already got some useful comments...I'll just add what I think about this.:D

I usually associate scents with people I know.So in my imagination Hotch smells a bit like my father (I know this may sounds weird but I think it's because my dad's and Hotch's personality is a bit alike. )Light, fresh, clean.
And a bit like the air after the rain. You know in summer before the rain everything is so heavy and then the rain falls down and the air clears up and you feel like that it washed away your sorrows and you can breath again. One of my favorite smells.:)

Gideon.Well he reminds of my former class teacher.Strong, stubborn but still caring and loving. The classic male smell.Something dominating but not overwhelming.

I appreciate your input....that's two for the classic male smell, we just have to figure out exactly what that is : )

Like orange ginger tea and old spice. DUH!
SSA McGeek: Jason......sweet grinmcgarrygirl78 on October 5th, 2009 11:38 pm (UTC)
I love you to death but you are wayyyyyyyyyyyyy off. Old Spice, ewwww *LOL* I can imagine his sweaters smelling like teas though.
Annekloksecondheartbeat on October 6th, 2009 12:16 am (UTC)
Okay, so if not old spice... stetson?

All damn day I have had the term "classic male scent" in my head and couldnt think of anything but finally it came to me, I think.....Draakar Noir. I cant wait til Saturday so I can get to Macy's and smell it and see if its Jason. Also, there are still the Ralph Lauren fragrances, very classic. I might check out some of the earlier Armanis as well but that seems a little hoity toity for him, Jason is classic but simple too.

I’m also with the “classic male scent” of After Shave/Cologne. I’m no good with brands but I’m thinking of the scent of cedarwood, maybe mixed with some herbal/spicy notes. I’d also mix in something for fresh breath, though not necessarily mint or menthol, something else I can’t just pinpoint, grape maybe. Another association coming to my mind is remnants of Earl Grey Tea aroma and maybe some mild scent from his last cooking session. Occasionally I could also see traces of dark chocolate scent. Also there is this special scent some (old) museums have which I can’t really describe but would somehow link with Gideon, maybe triggered by those scenes when he was at the Jeffersonian Institute.
SSA McGeek: Gideon....thought processesmcgarrygirl78 on October 7th, 2009 02:35 pm (UTC)
Thanks so much for your input : )

I ended up going with Drakkar Noir, which doesnt have the tea smell, though I always imagined Gideon's windbreakers having the distinct smell of tea as well. It is described as It is the result of the following top fragrance Notes: bergamot, lemon and rosemary. The middle notes are: basil, amber and patchouli and the base of the fragrance is: cedarwood, leather and sandalwood. Polo Double Black also worked for what I was going for but Drakkar has been around longer. No spicy but still as good as I could find.

Sounds like a real good match to me, though I’m not familiar with the brand. Thanks for elaborating. :)

Incredibly late to the conversation, but I would assume that the woodsy smell would be similar to actual burnt wood.

Stay with me.

His cabin would have a fire place, logically. And he strikes me as the type of guy that would go and cut his own wood and would burn it while at the cabin.

I picture him drinking a scotch and reading in front of his fireplace. Hence the smoky woodsy smell.
SSA McGeek: Gideon....sweet on hermcgarrygirl78 on October 18th, 2009 06:41 pm (UTC)
Yeah, I am totally with you, and agree totally. I settled on Drakkar Noir, but am leaning toward Hanae Mori but yeah.....that's the smell. I mean the scotch isnt in it but it has that burnt woodsy flavor, at least to me. And I am madly in love with it now.

Thank you so much for your input : )
